The National Audit Office has prepared this briefing to provide Parliament with information on the financial relationship between the UK and the European Union. It is intended to assist scrutiny of the government’s strategy for leaving the EU. The briefing: a) sets out some relevant background information about the EU; b) sets out EU revenue, payments, assets and liabilities; c) provides some information on how and where EU payments to the UK are spent.
